Holiday History

Heart Filled with hearts, chocolates and romantic cards, Valentine's Day as we know it today draws from two separate traditions. February 15th was the day of an annual feast in the Roman Empire called Lupercalia, which honored the Roman god Lupercus. One custom practiced during this festival was a name drawing. The names of all the unmarried girls were written down and placed in a jar. Each young man would pick a name from the jar and the two would be partners for the duration of the festival. Later, during Christianity's early days, Emerporer Claudius II didn't allow his soldiers to marry. He felt that the men would be less inclined to fight battles if they had families at home. However, a priest named Valentine continued to secretly marry couples despite this decree. Valentine, later named a saint, was put to death on February 14th for defying the Emperor. As Christianity became more widespread, the mid-February holiday was moved to February 14th to honor Saint Valentine instead of Lupercus.
